English Notes: Morses of Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, and Wiltshire; Extracts from the Parish Registers of St. Mary’s, Marlborough 1617-1630 and St. Peter’s, Marlborough, 1614-1621.
Descendants of the New England Morse progenitors through the sixth generation, in register format (over 11,000 individuals):
J. HOWARD MORSE
Identity not yet proven. We believe he was John Howard Morse born 14 May 1867, Essex CT; son of Jerome(7) Morse [Moses(6), Daniel(5), John(4), Anthony(3,2,1)].
There is no other likely candidate for the compiler of the Morse Genealogy within the society's databases. A conundrum arises because he is listed in an 1895 Morse Society pamphlet as Retired. This seems a dubious designation for a man only 28 years of age. It also seems unlikely that the original Morse Society would entrust their great publishing project to one so young. Enter, Miss Leavitt...
EMILY WILDER LEAVITT
Born 26 Dec 1836, Boston MA; daughter of Benson(6) Leavitt [Thomas(5), Benjamin(4), Thomas(3), Hezron(2) or Aretas(2), Thomas(1)] and Abigail Ward. Both the Leavitt and Ward ancestry go back to the 1600's in New Hampshire. There are no Morses in her ancestry of which we are aware, so we suspect that she was hired as an experienced genealogist to assist her younger co-editor. Miss Leavitt had an active career in genealogy research. By the late 1890's, when she took on the Morse Genealogy (at the age of 67), she had published several works on New England families. She died 2 Nov 1921.
